MDIA 384: Assignment #1

Assignment #1
(1) Shows I have been watching lately, since school got out, are How I Met Your Mother, Pan Am, Revenge, Modern Family, and New Girl.
(2)  Peripheral Shows that I watch are Dancing with the Stars and The Middle because of my mother. I also watch CBS Sunday Morning because of my Father (If I wake up in time for it). I occasionally watch Breaking Bad because it is my boyfriend's favorite show.
(3) Some Guilty No-Gos of mine are American Horror Story, The League, and The Walking Dead. My sister continually tells me to watch The League but I just can't get into it. And American Horror and The Walking Dead are just too gruesome for me.
(4) My Guilty Pleasures are all of the Real Housewives Series on Bravo (Except Miami and Atlanta- no offense to the South- they just don't have any characters I can root for), The Kardashians, and Glee. I know people hate the Kardashians for being famous for nothing but I watch it anyways. And Glee has arguably been off base this season in terms of storyline but I just watch for the musical numbers.
(5) My All-Time Favorites are How I Met Your Mother, The West Wing, 30 Rock, and Modern Family. When I was younger I wanted to work in politics just because of the West Wing. I still like to the believe the West Wing of the White House is exactly like Aaron Sorkin's television version of the West Wing, with lots of witty banter.
(6) In terms of Shows I Used to Like there is Weeds, Friends, Will and Grace, Boston Public, Law and Order: SVU, and The Bachelor. I am not proud of the Bachelor but I liked it a long time ago in the first seasons, not the 12th or whatever they are on. I loved the first 3 seasons of Weeds before it got crazy and completely off topic of the premise of the show.
(7) Shows I Resisted But Now I'm a Fan of are Community, and Friday Night Lights. I finally gave Friday Night Lights a shot and then became hooked right when the show was wrapping up. Texas Forever.
(8) I Would Rather Eat Charcoal Than Watch Wipe Out, pretty much anything on MTV or Comedy Central (Jersey Shore and My Super Sweet 16) and Roseanne. I just don't understand Wipe Out at all. Physical Humor just isn't my thing. I don't really enjoy vulgar language so MTV and Comedy Central don't fit my taste either. And Roseanne, well I don't think I need to explain that one.
(9) Shows I Put On in the Background are Big Rich Texas and anything on the Food Network.

  1. Hi Margaret!

I decided to comment on your blog because I noticed that our guilty pleasure in television viewing is VERY similar! I also love anything Kardashian lol as well as Glee and The Real Housewives of wherever. I enjoy Glee mainly because I love the arts and Glee focuses on that solely and makes it appear "cool".
--I found it interesting that you also watch the food network as "background"...as do I! Usually I'm tuned in on weekends while I catch up on homework or pick up my apartment.
--I also enjoy Pan Am, although I need to get caught up on this season! Since you liked Law & Order, were you a CSI fan? I am!!

    Happy Viewing!

  2. I am commenting also because of your guilty pleasure, The Real Housewives. My question is what is the appeal of Real Housewives? I understand it isn't targeted towards men, but I have seen a few clips in Jenny's class. Is the appeal that these women embarrass themselves in front of family, friends, and the camera? I get that, but GOD these women are ridiculous. I guess thats my two cents on that.
Listen to your sis, The League is hilarious. They do a good job of keeping it raunchy and smart. For example one of the characters has a young child who over hears the trash talking and starts doing it in Kindergarten. Hilarity ensues.

  3. As I said before, I'm going to comment on your blog based on our shared love for the Real Housewives and other shows we share in common.

-I think it's really funny that we both have people in the house that watch "The Middle," I feel like it's an enjoyable show, but for some reason I'd never actually go out of my way to watch it on a regular basis.

-I'm so pissed at Teresa from Jersey. She is seriously a nut case. I don't know why she can't just make amends with her family and admit that she is wrong every once in a while. Also, how dare she cross Caroline Manzo. I have a strong feeling that shit is going to go down next season. I'm so pumped.

-I didn't have it on my list, but I also enjoy watching the Kardashians whenever I get the chance. I'm not really sure why I'm drawn towards their show, I think it has to do with how contradicting they are. In the sense that they say they, "work really hard," but 90% of the show is them sitting around yelling at Scott.

-As far as Glee, I have to agree with it being so off base for a while now. That's actually why I've stopped watching it, but maybe I'll get back into it over break again.

  4. I am going to start by commenting on your Guilty No-Gos. You should definitely start watching The League it is an awesome show. It is actually starting to be funnier than It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia if you have ever seen that on FX. Also, I want to start watching American Horror Story but I am too afraid. I think we should get a big group together and then watch it. Maybe it won't be as scary. I wrote about how much I hate MTV as well. I just don't think the content on that station is even worth watching. It is just so awful. I always just go right past it and don't even look what is airing.

  5. I started to watch How I met your Mother and originally thought the show was great. However, as I continued to watch it became difficult for me to separate the actors roles from the television show and films they had featured in. For example, every time I see Neil Patrick Harris, I think of him eating a bag full of psychedelic mushrooms while being pulled over by the police and visioning a magical unicorn in Harold and Kumar. Then there is Jason Sego. Every time he has a line I anticipate the Dracula musical from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And if that was not enough, there is the girl from American Pie. I should continue to watch and support the show knowing that the main character Jason Radnor, went and graduated from my highshcool in Bexley, Ohio.

  6. The walking dead is so good. It's based off a comic (I haven't read, but some of my friends have, and said it was awesome), and I tend to love anything based off of a comic. It's just a fun zombie show, but I always want some kind of closure with zombie movies, and the fact that it's a tv series now means I'll never get that. :(

I also enjoyed the first season of the Bachelor, but I think it was because it was the first show of its kind that I saw and it was a fun new thing for me, but after that I pretty much never wanted to see another one again, and I feel bad I liked The Bachelor.
